Research of the Day
Early Peanut Introduction: 8-Year Outcomes from the LEAP Trial Extension
Extended follow-up of the landmark LEAP trial confirms sustained peanut allergy protection 8 years after early introduction, even when children stopped regular peanut consumption. The protective effect persists regardless of continued consumption.
Key findings: (1) 74% reduction in peanut allergy maintained at 8 years; (2) Protection sustained even after 12-month period of avoiding peanuts; (3) Early introduction (4-6 months) most effective for high-risk infants.
Reinforce early peanut introduction guidance, especially for infants with eczema or egg allergy. Recommend 2g peanut protein, 3 times weekly starting at 4-6 months in appropriate form.
Popular Beliefs
ADD/ADHD is caused by poor parenting or too much sugar
What the evidence shows: ADHD has strong genetic and neurobiological components. While environment can influence symptom severity, poor parenting and diet do not cause ADHD. Evidence-based treatments include behavioral therapy and, when appropriate, medication. Blaming parents is harmful and delays effective intervention.
Starve a fever, feed a cold
What the evidence shows: Neither fevers nor colds benefit from restricting food. Both conditions increase metabolic demands, and adequate nutrition supports immune function. Encourage normal eating as tolerated and emphasize hydration with any illness.
Remove ticks with a lit match or petroleum jelly
What the evidence shows: These methods can cause the tick to regurgitate into the wound, increasing disease transmission risk. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin and pull upward with steady pressure. Save the tick for identification if possible.

Sleep Schedule Consistency and ADHD Symptoms: Intervention Study
This intervention study examined whether consistent sleep schedules improved ADHD symptoms in 150 children ages 6-12. Families implemented strict bed/wake times for 8 weeks while tracking symptoms and sleep.
Key findings: (1) Consistent sleep reduced inattention symptoms by 25%; (2) Bedtime resistance decreased significantly; (3) Effects comparable to some medication responses. Weekend sleep consistency was particularly important.
Before escalating ADHD treatment, optimize sleep hygiene. Consistent bed/wake times (including weekends) can meaningfully improve symptoms. This is a low-risk intervention all families can implement.

Exon-Skipping Therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Expanded Approvals
FDA has approved additional exon-skipping therapies targeting previously untreatable Duchenne muscular dystrophy mutations. These antisense oligonucleotide treatments now cover 80% of DMD patients, slowing disease progression.
Key findings: (1) Treated patients maintain ambulation 2-4 years longer; (2) Cardiac and respiratory function also preserved; (3) Earlier treatment initiation correlates with better outcomes.
Genetic testing to identify specific DMD mutation is essential for treatment planning. Refer to neuromuscular centers for evaluation. Treatment options continue to expand rapidly.
